chick lit by a fellow lawyer!

UVA Law grad Emily Giffin was formerly a litigation associate at Winston & Strawn in New York. According to her autobiography, Giffin “hate[d] nearly every second of her legal career, except perhaps the firm cocktail parties.”

Today, Giffin is the author of New York Times bestseller Something Borrowed, which was recently made into a movie starring Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson. Giffin’s other novels — Something Blue, Love the One You’re With, Baby Proof, and Heart of the Matter – are on the top of every girl’s chick lit list.

The skeleton of chick lit is pretty universal: cute 30 something year old girl living in the big city; dating some unbelievably hot guys who all seem to lust after the heroine; girl runs into some major life issues; issues resolved; lessons learned; girl ends up with “the” guy. Nonetheless, there is something about Giffin's novels that just *tugs* at the reader’s heartstrings. Her sentences are beautifully constructed and resonate with the reader.

For those who have not have the privilege of reading her five fabulous novels, here are snippets from her novels.

My wants are simple: a job that I like and a guy whom I love…
Love and friendship. They are what make us who we are, and what can change us, if we let them
I miss him in so many ways, but right now I miss him in the way you always miss someone when you're single among a room full of couples…
love is the sum of our choices, the strength of our commitments, the ties that bind us together…
It always takes two. For relationships to work, for them to break apart, for them to be fixed

We're SO excited for Giffin's next novel, Where We Belong, to come out in early 2012. In the meantime, if you have any other chick lit recommendations, leave a comment below! We’d love to expand our chick lit bookshelf!
